The Kochi University of Technology (KUT) Special Scholarship Program (SSP) on research projects in the field of Engineering for International Doctoral applicants, Japan 2024/2025.

The Special Scholarship Program (SSP) was established in 2004 in order to support the advanced research of the university by enlisting the help of highly capable students especially students from foreign countries. Every year in April and October, the university enrolls selected doctoral students for specific research projects. The students pursue the doctoral course in English (excl. Japanese students) while at the same time assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). Through this program KUT wishes to expand and deepen international ties with academic and educational institutions all over the world.

Obligation

  • The SSP student must work 50 hours per month for a specific research project at the university.
  •  The SSP student must report his/her study and research achievements to the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering at the end of each semester. The submitted report will be evaluated by the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering.

Kochi University of Technology (KUT) 2024 Special Scholarship Program for International Students Established in 1997, Kochi University of Technology is a public higher education institution located in the medium-sized town of Kami (population range of 10,000-49,999 inhabitants), Kochi. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, Kochi University of Technology is a coeducational higher education institution. Kochi University of Technology offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. This 22 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 20-30% making this Japanese higher education organization a very selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants are required to meet all of the following conditions

  1. To have permission from the leader of the applicant's preferred SSP project to apply for that project
  2. To hold a degree from an accredited institution comparable to the master's degree offered at KUT after 18 years of education, or to be scheduled to acquire such a degree before the KUT enrollment date
  3. To be 35 years old or under at the time of enrollment, in principle
  4. To have an excellent academic record and strong bachelor's and master's degrees from reputable universities
  5. To have the intention, adequate knowledge and research skill to work in the  research project
  6. To have high English proficiency (TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, CET6)

Offered Benefits

The Special Scholarship Program at KUT provides several attractive benefits to its scholars:

  • Tuition and Fees Waiver: Exemption from the entrance examination fee (30,000 yen), enrollment fee (300,000 yen), and annual tuition fee (535,800 yen).
  • Monthly Stipend: A salary of 150,000 yen per month for research project work to support living expenses. Note that some taxes may be deducted.
  • Travel and Initial Living Costs: 150,000 yen is provided for travel and initial living costs for international students living outside Japan who intend to acquire “Student” residence status in Japan at the time of entry.

Application Process

  1. Choose one research project from the  SSP Research Project List
  2. Send a complete Online Pre-Application Request to the leader of your preferred project via  KUT Online Pre-Application Request Form and obtain the leader's permission to apply for that SSP project. Applicants are not allowed to make Pre-Application Request more than once in a given entry period. Please note that a project leader may not contact you in the case where your pre-application request is rejected.
  3. When you obtain a permission from the project leader, complete all required documents and submit them to KUT by post. The documents must reach KUT by the deadline.

  • Original master’s degree academic transcript in English or Japanese
  • Original master’s degree certificate in English or Japanese
  • A copy of the intending applicant’s master’s thesis in English
  • Research Outline
  • Two signed recommendation letters in English or Japanese
  • Certificate of English ability
  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of publication(s)
  • A copy of an email or other  communication which clearly shows that the leader of the intending applicant’s preferred project has given the intending applicant permission to apply for that SSP project
  • Signed pre-application request
