The German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) is pleased to announce the Karl Ferdinand Werner Fellowship, supporting short-term research stays in Paris for historians affiliated with German universities. The fellowship offers access to DHIP’s extensive library, infrastructure, and accommodation in its guest rooms. It is ideal for researchers focusing on archival work, manuscript development, or fostering Franco-German academic collaboration.

Applicants must be professors or mid-level academic staff with a completed doctorate, primarily affiliated with German universities. Their research should align with DHIP’s focus areas. Researchers from related fields and former fellows may also apply if space allows.

The German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) is a renowned research center dedicated to the study of French, German, and European history. It promotes international academic exchange, supports historical research, and offers rich resources including a specialized library, archival access, and a vibrant scholarly community in Paris.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Primarily Germany; other nationalities considered if spots are available

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship supports research in history and related interdisciplinary subjects relevant to DHIP’s fields of work

  • Admissible Criteria:

    • Applicants must hold a completed doctorate (PhD)

    • Must be affiliated with a German university as a professor or mid-level academic staff

    • Research projects must align with the DHIP’s academic focus

    • Applicants must demonstrate a need for research in Paris, e.g., using local archives or libraries

    • Former KFW fellows may reapply

    • Researchers from related disciplines may apply if their work is interdisciplinary

Application Process

Required Documents:

  • Cover letter stating the intended duration and time frame of the stay

  • Research project outline (max. 5,000 characters including spaces), including relevant archives/libraries

  • Tabular CV

  • List of publications

Application Deadlines:

  • February 15 (for stays in summer/autumn of the current year)

  • September 15 (for stays in the first half of the following year)
