The South Asia Institute (SAI) of Heidelberg University, in partnership with the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies Delhi (MWF Delhi), invites applications for a three-month Scholarship in summer 2026.

The award is open to researchers from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or Bangladesh, it supports project development into funding proposals in SAI fields like anthropology and political science. Eligibility for the Joint Scholarship Program of the South Asia Institute (SAI), Heidelberg University, and the Max Weber Forum Delhi targets early-career researchers from specific South Asian countries.

Joint SAI–Heidelberg & Max Weber Forum Delhi Scholarship for Young Scholars from South Asia for Fellowship Founded in 1850, Heidelberg University is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the rural setting of the medium-sized town of Tiffin (population range of 10,000-49,999 inhabitants), Ohio. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Higher Learning Commission, Heidelberg University (HU) is a very small (uniRank enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational higher education institution formally affiliated with the Christian-Protestant religion. Heidelberg University (HU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 169 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 70-80% making this US higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship supports research in ethnology/anthropology, history, political science, economics, geography, modern South Asian languages and literatures, or cultural and religious history of South Asia (Classical Indology), aligned with SAI’s departments.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • Hold a doctoral degree (provide copy of certificate).

  • Propose a project to develop into a third-party funding application (e.g., research, exchange, or events).

  • Commit to SAI events during the April–June 2026 residency in Heidelberg.
