The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) 2025 is now open for applications! This prestigious scholarship supports students from developing countries who are committed to their country’s development and wish to pursue a master’s degree in key fields such as economic policy, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

To be eligible for the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), applicants must be from a World Bank member developing country and should not have dual citizenship of a developed country. They must have a bachelor’s degree earned at least three years before applying and at least three years of recent, paid, development-related work experience.

The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides funding, policy advice, and technical assistance to developing countries to reduce poverty and promote sustainable economic growth. Established in 1944, it consists of five institutions, with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA) being the main arms that offer financial support.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants must be nationals of a World Bank member developing country (as per the official list).
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship supports master’s degree programs in key development-related fields, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Be a national of a World Bank member developing country.
    • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
    • Be in good health.
    • Hold a bachelor’s degree earned at least three years prior to the application deadline.
    • Have at least three years of paid, development-related employment since earning a bachelor’s degree (within the past six years).
    • Be employed in a full-time, development-related position at the time of application.
    • Be admitted unconditionally (except for financial support) to one of the 41 JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs outside their home country.
    • Not be an Executive Director, alternate, or staff member of the World Bank Group or a close relative of any such individual.
    • Individuals who have previously received a JJ/WBGSP scholarship but did not complete the program are not eligible to reapply.

Offered Benefits

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides the recipient with:

  • Full tuition for the master’s program.
  • Economy-class airfare between the scholar’s home country and the host university at the beginning and end of the program.
  • A US $600 travel allowance for each trip.
  • Medical insurance through the host university.
  • A monthly living stipend covering accommodation, food, and books (varies by host country).
  • Scholarships are awarded for the full duration of the master’s program or two years, whichever is shorter.

Application Process

  • The application form link will only be provided to candidates who are unconditionally admitted to a JJ/WBGSP participating master’s program and shortlisted by the university.
  • Applicants must reach out to the university offering their target JJ/WBGSP master’s program to confirm eligibility.
  • A letter of admission must be uploaded before submitting the scholarship application.
