JFNY Grant for Japanese Studies in United States for Bachelor


The Japan Foundation, New York (JFNY) invites applications for its ongoing JFNY Grant for Japanese Studies, designed to support academic projects that promote a deeper understanding of Japan. U.S.-based institutions with 501(c)(3) status are encouraged to apply for funding to host conferences, symposia, lectures, and other scholarly events—either in-person or virtually.

Applicants must be U.S.-based institutions or organizations with 501(c)(3) status. Projects must aim to promote Japanese Studies and cannot include language education, scientific or commercial activities, or trips to Japan. Individuals and for-profit entities are not eligible.

The Japan Foundation, New York (JFNY) is a leading cultural institution dedicated to promoting mutual understanding between the United States and Japan through cultural exchange and academic collaboration. As the American branch of the Japan Foundation, JFNY supports a wide range of initiatives, including Japanese language education, arts and cultural programming, and academic research in Japanese Studies.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: United States

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The grant will support academic projects that promote Japanese Studies, such as conferences, lectures, colloquia, and presentations.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Must be a U.S.-based institution or organization with 501(c)(3) status.

    • The project must aim to promote Japanese Studies.

    • Organizations must not have received this grant for three consecutive years ending in FY 2022-2023.

    • The project must not have already received funding from other Japan Foundation grants in the same fiscal year.

    • The proposal must not include ineligible themes such as language education, martial arts, medical or scientific topics, or religious/political/commercial activities.

    • Study tours and research trips to Japan are also excluded.

Offered Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Up to $5,000 in funding.

  • Coverage for honoraria, travel, and accommodation for participants.

  • Support for research materials, printing, online-related costs, and venue/equipment rentals (excluding rentals within the applying institution).

Application Process

Interested applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Completed application form detailing how the project will contribute to Japanese Studies and its broader impact.

  • Detailed project timeline and, if applicable, a schedule of events or itinerary.

  • Budget sheet with specific breakdowns and justifications (rounded down to the nearest cent).

  • Proof of 501(c)(3) status.

  • CVs of project organizers and those receiving honoraria.

  • A list of other public or private grants received by the organization.

Note: Priority is given to projects that have secured supplementary funding from sources other than the Japan Foundation.
