Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Students from the UK and EU are eligible to apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for a Postgraduate research degree in the Department of Computer Science, any subject offered by the university
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • Funding is available for UK and EU nationals for the three-year PhD program.
  • The Department studentship pays all tuition fees and a three-year stipend award. Applicants must be eligible to pay ‘home’ fees. There will sometimes also be an opportunity to teach in the form of laboratory demonstration work to supplement their income.
  • To be considered, they must have an academic offer for a place in the PhD in Computer Science.

The James Elson Studentship provides an outstanding candidate with fees and a stipend to undertake a three-year PhD research project relating to computer science applications in a specific area of research.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: Applicants must apply online for Postgraduate research admission to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. All eligible students will be considered upon application.

  • Official transcripts
  • Research proposal
  • A copy of your passport
  • Evidence of English language ability

  • Admission Requirements: Candidates must, at a minimum, satisfy the academic requirements for entry into PhD programs within the Department of Computer Science.
  • However, this is a highly competitive student. Therefore, the supervisor and the final PGR interview panel will be looking for candidates who can best demonstrate their potential to undertake their selected research project and complete the doctoral program to the standard necessary to qualify for a PhD.
  • Language Requirement: Applicants must meet the English language requirements at the University of Manchester.
