For providing financial support to needy students, the ARES (Academy of Research and Higher Education, Belgium) is awarding International Training Scholarships for the academic year 2026–2027.

To be eligible for the ARES International Training Scholarships, applicants must be permanent residents and currently working in one of the 31 ARES partner countries. Palestinian nationals are also eligible, even if residing outside these countries. Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a first-cycle (180 ECTS) or second-cycle (300 ECTS) diploma from Belgian higher education, depending on the program type. At least two years of relevant professional experience in an ARES partner country is also required.

The Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES), or Académie de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur in French, is the umbrella organization for higher education institutions in the French-speaking community of Belgium (the Wallonia-Brussels Federation). Established in 2014, ARES plays a crucial role in coordinating and supporting these institutions in their missions of teaching, research, and community service.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Citizens and residents of one of the 31 ARES partner countries are eligible:

    • Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe

    • Latin America & Caribbean: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru

    • Asia & Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam, and the Palestinian Territories (even if not residing in the listed countries).

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship is applicable to the following programs:

    • 1 Specialized Bachelor’s Degree

    • 10 Specialized Master’s Degrees, including:

      • Human Rights

      • Risk and Disaster Management

      • Integrated Health Risk Management

      • International and Development Economics

      • Microfinance

      • Public Health Methodology

      • Health Policy and Systems Evaluation

      • Transport and Logistics

      • Social Innovation Design

      • Water-Energy-Food Nexus

    • 6 Continuing Training Courses (2–6 months duration)

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Be a permanent resident and working in one of the eligible countries.

    • For specialized master’s and continuing education: hold a degree equivalent to a 2nd cycle diploma (300 ECTS).

    • For specialized bachelor’s: hold a degree equivalent to a 1st cycle diploma (180 ECTS).

    • Have at least two years of relevant professional experience.

    • Apply online via the GIRAF platform before the deadline.

  • Online via the  GIRAF platform.
  • Steps:

    1. Create or log into your GIRAF account.

    2. Access the application under Application for international training 2026-2027 > My tasks > Competitive calls.

    3. Fill out the form (can be completed over multiple sessions).

    4. Submit your application via “Submit my application.”
