The University of Stuttgart is offering a two-year International Postdoctoral Position in Earth Science within the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech). The project “UNI-BENCH: Diagnostic benchmarking of hybrid hydrological models” focuses on advancing hybrid modeling by combining physics-based and data-driven approaches to improve trust and interpretability in hydrological models.

Applicants must hold a PhD in hydrology, geosciences, environmental engineering, computer or data science, or a related discipline. They should have a strong interest in physics-based or data-driven modeling, model diagnostics, or interpretability, along with experience in coding, model building, or applying information-theoretic methods.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applications are welcome from candidates of all nationalities.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The position is open for research in Earth Sciences, hydrology, geosciences, environmental engineering, computer/data science, or closely related disciplines.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Hold a PhD with very good results in a relevant field (hydrology, geosciences, environmental engineering, computer or data science).

    • Demonstrated interest in topics like physics-based or data-driven modelling, model training, evaluation, diagnostics, interpretability, or explainability.

    • Prior experience in at least one area: coding algorithms, model building (physics-based, conceptual or data-driven), model calibration/uncertainty assessment, or applying information-theoretic concepts.

    • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, MATLAB, R, Julia, or C++.

    • Excellent English language skills (C1 level); German language skills are an asset (B1/B2).
