The PhD project will focus on the development of advanced numerical methods for high-contrast diffusion based on space-time formulations and multigrid methods. Eligibility Criteria

- Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the university
- Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
- Have fully graduated with a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (applied/computational mathematics, simulation technology, computational mechanics, mechanical/aerospace engineering, physics, etc.) by the application date.
- Proficient in the theory, derivation, and implementation of numerical methods.
- Experience with three or more of the following:
- Galerkin finite element methods
- Iterative linear solvers and preconditioners
- Multigrid methods
- Space-time methods
- Mathematical optimization theory
- Topology optimization
- Mathematical analysis
- Experience with programming in MATLAB and/or python (additional experience with C/C++ is a plus).
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (SDU-DME) at the University of Southern Denmark announces a fully-funded PhD scholarship in advanced numerical methods for time-dependent topology optimization. This scholarship is part of the research project “Breaking the time barrier: COmputational Morphogenesis FOR Time-dependent Problems (COMFORT)” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) through a Sapere Aude Starting Grant. The aim of the project is to significantly reduce the time-to-solution of topology optimization for time-dependent thermal diffusion and incompressible fluid flow.
Offered Benefits
The scholarship is a full-time, in-person position, and candidates are expected to work primarily on campus. Successful candidates will be enrolled at SDU for a 3-year salaried position. The working language is English, and candidates are expected to contribute to the teaching activities of the department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join the ‘Multiphysics Simulation and Optimisation’ research group, lead by Associate Professor Joe Alexandersen, and will engage in a 3-year PhD project with a 4 to 6-month visit to KU Leuven in Belgium.

Application Process
The application deadline is the 1st of March 2024. Applicants are required to:
- Complete the TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants available on the Faculty website.
- Submit a motivation letter stating specific interest, motivation, and qualifications for the project (max. 2 pages).
- Provide a detailed Curriculum Vitae, including research, publication, and teaching experience, computational skills, and personal contact information.
- Include verified copies of the official bachelor and master’s diplomas and transcripts of exams, both in the original language and in professional English translation.
- Complete the TEK PhD form for calculating grade point average, available on the Faculty website.
- Include an official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish).
- Submit an official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade-giving institution.
- Provide a list of publications and a maximum of 2 examples of relevant publications.
- Include three names and emails of researchers who can provide informed reference letters at short notice.
- Reference letters may also be included, with at least two signed reference letters. The form for the reference letter is available on the Faculty website.
