Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) at Erasmus University Rotterdam invites applications for a International PhD Position in Economics within the General Economics department. This four-year program, starting in September 2025, focuses on Applied Microeconomics, particularly in Labor Economics, Development Economics, Personnel Economics, and Organization Economics.

To be eligible for this PhD position, applicants must hold an MPhil or Research Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics, or Physics (preferred). Candidates with an MSc or MA degree must complete one year of coursework at the graduate school they join (Tinbergen Institute or ERIM).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Applicants from all nationalities are eligible to apply.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for a PhD in Economics, with a focus on Applied Microeconomics, particularly Labor Economics, Development Economics, Personnel Economics, and Organization Economics.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Hold an MPhil or Research Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics, or Physics (preferred).
  • Candidates with an MSc or MA degree must complete one year of courses at the graduate school (Tinbergen Institute or ERIM).
  • Demonstrate excellent academic performance at both bachelor’s and master’s levels.
  • Show interest and strong motivation for scientific research in a statement of purpose.
  • Submit GRE test scores for all three sections (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing). Candidates must score in the top 10% of the quantitative section; applicants with a Q score below 160 will not be considered.
  • Have proficiency in English demonstrated by:
    • Holding a degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction, OR
    • Scoring at least 100 on TOEFL iBT or 7 on IELTS.
  • Provide two academic reference letters (preferably from a thesis or research supervisor). Letters should be sent to .
