Global Affairs Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians (IPSFC), a major funding initiative aimed at enhancing academic and research engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. With up to $10 million in funding available over three years, this program supports Canadian graduate students, researchers, and academics in undertaking study or research activities in eligible Indo-Pacific countries.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be affiliated with a Canadian post-secondary institution, university consortium, or research organization. Eligible participants include graduate students, researchers, and academics. Proposed study or research activities must take place in an eligible Indo-Pacific country and align with the strategic objectives of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, such as diplomacy, security, sustainability, innovation, and economic cooperation.

Global Affairs Canada is the department of the Government of Canada responsible for the country’s foreign affairs, international trade, and development assistance. It manages Canada’s diplomatic and consular relations, promotes international trade and investment, supports global peace and security, and delivers humanitarian aid and development programs around the world.

Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadians (IPSFC) Founded in 1821, McGill University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Montréal (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Quebec. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Ste. Anne de Bellevue. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur, Québec (Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Quebec), McGill University is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 30,000-34,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. McGill University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Canada (applicants must be affiliated with Canadian institutions); host institutions must be based in eligible Indo-Pacific countries:

    • Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam

    • South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka

    • Northeast Asia: Japan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, Taiwan

    • Oceania: Australia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will support study and research activities in disciplines aligned with the Indo-Pacific Strategy, including:

    • Regional diplomacy

    • Political change

    • National and regional security

    • Economic cooperation and trade

    • Technological innovation

    • Sustainable development

    • Climate change

    • Marine and natural resource management

    • Applied scientific collaboration

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Be affiliated with a Canadian post-secondary institution, university consortium, or research organization

    • Be a graduate student, researcher, or academic

    • Propose a study/research activity in an eligible Indo-Pacific country

    • Ensure the activity aligns with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy

Application Process

  • Interested applicants affiliated with McGill University should email to request the internal application form.

  • Submit the completed application and all supporting materials to the same email by Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 5:00 pm (internal deadline).

  • The external submission deadline is Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 12:00 pm (noon).

  • Final applications will be submitted by McGill’s Global Engagement Office in collaboration with the selected applicant(s).
