IMPRS for Analysis, Design, and Optimisation in Chemical and Biochemical Process Engineering

  •  Master, Phd, Fellowship

The Max Planck Institute Magdeburg is not only a place for research but also for education and training. There are particularly strong links between the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg and the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, especially with the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering.

The International Max Planck Research School Magdeburg is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. Its main goal is to provide excellent training and PhD projects with regard to the analysis, design and optimization in chemical and biochemical process engineering. The focus is on the development and the application of mathematical modeling approaches and system theoretical methods used to identify system structures, investigate process behavior and design technical processes for specific tasks.

As the IMPRS aims to foster a close interplay between theory and experiment, the program also encompasses the experimental characterization of challenging technical processes to identify key components of structure and function, analyze systems under a variety of different process conditions, characterize influence of modifications and perturbations on process performance, enhance process yields and validate mathematical models.

The broad range of lectures and seminars within this interdisciplinary programme includes systems and control theory, methods of continuous and discrete mathematics, numerical methods, fundamental and advanced courses in chemical and bioprocess engineering as well as selected topics from various biological and medical disciplines.

As of April 2013, the funding of the International Max Planck Research School Magdeburg was extended for another six years period until 2019 by the Max Planck Society. The IMPRS was renamed to IMPRS for Advanced Methods in Process and Systems Engineering or shortly IMPRS ProEng.

Eligibility Criteria

The IMPRS aims to become a school for excellent researchers in the multidisciplinary field that is marked by
- engineering,
- mathematics,
- biology and
- chemistry.
We are looking for young talented scientists from all over the world to join the IMPRS as PhD students. Required is a Diploma or Master degree and a profound knowledge of the English language.
You should write a very precise letter of your personal motivation, that also explains your qualifications to perform outstanding research and to author an excellent thesis on that topic. Please use the online application form to apply to the IMPRS Magdeburg. Please read also the short description of the research groups related to the IMPRS. At the moment we advertise several roughly defined topics, you should find at least one of them interesting and challenging enough to write your thesis to this subject.
