Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap, Nederland (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Netherlands), Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 30,000-34,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.   • Admissible Criteria: Candidates desiring to take part in the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship program must meet the following requirements:
  • Hold a non-EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans and/or the low tuition fee.
  • Be fully admitted to a degree program at the Graduate School of Social Sciences. Scholarship continuation is not guaranteed when a candidate changes their degree program.
  • The AMS will not be awarded to candidates having to complete a preparatory program (pre-masters) before their master,
  • The only exception is if a candidate is required only to complete the Summer School Program: Comprehensive Introduction to Research Methodology and Design (of which the applicant bears the costs).
  • Be admitted unconditionally to a Master’s program of the Graduate School of Social Sciences, this program being the first program for the applicant, either at bachelor level or master level, in The Netherlands.
  • Be able to comply with Dutch visa regulations.
  • Be enrolled at the UvA as full-time student for the academic year and the program for which the scholarship is awarded.
  • The candidate should not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same study period as the AMS scholarship. Notify the scholarship office when another full scholarship has been awarded and accepted.
  • Scholarship continuation for subsequent years of study depends upon satisfactory study progress.

Offered Benefits

The scholarship consists of an amount equal to the tuition fee. Scholarship holders will also receive their grants in monthly installments. AMS awards are only granted to candidates who have been acknowledged to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programs of the GSSS upon enrolment.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: To be considered for the AMS award program, applicants must complete and submit a Master’s application with all required documents, including valid language test scores.
  • Supporting Documents: All required documents must submit to support an applicant:
  • Scan of the identity page of the passport
  • Letter of motivation
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Financial plan
  • Proof of language test scores
  • Admission Requirements: The master’s program applicants want to apply for might set extra requirements such as academic and language requirements. Applicants must check the entry requirements of a Master’s program before applying.
  • Language Requirement: A high level of English language proficiency is expected of all applicants.
