Fully-Funded PhD in Department of Early Irish at Maynooth University, Ireland Founded in 1997, Maynooth University is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the medium-sized town of Maynooth (population range of 10,000-49,999 inhabitants), County Kildare. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Ireland
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree will be awarded in any subject offered by the university
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Ability to write well in English
  • Knowledge of Latin or Old Irish (these are essential skills for the project, but students can undertake modules on these languages during the PhD)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good understanding of the Church in medieval Ireland
  • Reading knowledge of French.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Some understanding of medieval paleography

Offered Benefits

The Maynooth University will provide the fully-funded award which includes tuition fees, travel, work expense budget, and graduate training to complete their study in Ireland.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: To apply for the grant, applicants must take admission in PhD degree at the university. After that, they can apply through an application made via The Common App or  PAC.
  • Supporting Documents: Students must have to submit a Cover letter (max. two pages), which should include a discussion of how they will address the PhD research project described above
  • CV, which should include the names and contact details of two academic referees
  • Writing sample (e.g., an academic essay/article or section of MA dissertation)
  • Two academic references (which can be sent separately, direct from the referee, if desired)
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a first-class or upper second class Master’s degree in Medieval History, Celtic Studies, or a cognate discipline that broadly aligns with the subject of research
  • Language Requirement: Minimum English language requirements:
  • IELTS: 6.5 minimum overall score
  • TOEFL (Paper-based test): 585
  • TOEFL (Internet-based test): 95
  • PTE (Pearson): 62
