The Department of English, German and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship, starting 1 September 2025. The position is part of the project ‘Nordic Exceptionalism: Perspectives on a European Periphery’ and focuses on analysing 19th-century Anglophone travel narratives about Denmark using digital humanities methods.

To be eligible for the PhD scholarship, applicants must hold a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent and have at least submitted a pre-approved Master’s thesis by the application deadline. Candidates should demonstrate strong academic English language skills, possess experience or interest in nineteenth-century studies and digital text analysis, and have familiarity with digitised corpora and tools such as Python or Voyant.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in the subject of English studies with a focus on nineteenth-century Anglophone travel narratives and digital text analysis, under the broader project Nordic Exceptionalism.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent and have submitted a Master’s thesis with pre-approval at the time of application.

    • Have strong academic English language skills (written and spoken).

    • Demonstrate research interest and/or experience in nineteenth-century studies and digital text analysis.

    • Have experience working with digitised corpora and tools such as Python or Voyant (advantageous).

    • Fluency in Danish is required for fieldwork and data analysis.

    • Meet admission requirements for the PhD School at the Faculty of Humanities, UCPH.
