The PhD position is fully funded by a Maynard Smith PhD studentship from the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex. The student will conduct experiments on individuals from forest cores and edges.

Fully-Funded Life Sciences PhD Studentships in Biology, UK Established in 1961, University of Sussex is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the large town of Brighton (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), South East England.   • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD studentship in Life Sciences Biology offered by the University of Sussex
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • An MSc degree will be advantageous. We expect a highly motivated, talented, well-organized, and meticulous candidate with strong quantitative skills.
  • The candidate will have a background and demonstrable interest in one or more behavioral ecology, insect physiology, evolution, or ecology. Previous experience in collecting data in the field, working with insects, behavioral observations, physiological analyses, and statistical modeling.

Offered Benefits

The PhD position is fully funded by a Maynard Smith PhD studentship from the School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex. Funding includes full home tuition fees and a stipend at UKRI rates for 3.5 years. Applicants with overseas fee status will need to fund the difference between Home and International tuition fees (see https://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/fees-funding/tuition-fees).

  • How to Apply: Students are required to make an  admission application to the PhD Biology degree programme at the University of Sussex, including a cover letter (headed with project title), a short potential project outline (ca. 300-500 words), CV (max two pages), BSc/MSc degree transcripts and certificates, IELTS certificate (if non-UK) and two academic references.
  • Supporting Documents: Applicants must submit the academic transcripts of all previous schools attended and a copy of their passport and including a cover letter (headed with project title), a short potential project outline (ca. 300-500 words), CV (max two pages), BSc/MSc degree transcripts and certificates, IELTS certificate (if non-UK) and two academic references.
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants are required to have a minimum (2.1) in biology or an allied science such as ecology.
  • Language Requirement: Candidates for whom English is not their first language will require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with not less than 6.0 in any section.
