The University of British Columbia is excited to offer the Friedman Award for Scholars in Health, designed to support graduate students and medical residents in their pursuit of research abroad. With awards up to $50,000, this is your chance to travel, collaborate with global experts, and contribute to innovative health research.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a UBC graduate program (Master’s or Doctoral) or a UBC medical residency program at the time of application. They are expected to travel outside of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for a minimum of 6 months, engaging in transformative experiences that provide new perspectives and foster international collaborations.   • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject related to health, including health promotion, disease prevention, mental health research, laboratory sciences, public health, health services, and more.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet all the following criteria:
    • Be enrolled in a UBC graduate program (Master’s or Doctoral) or medical residency as of the application deadline.
    • Travel for a minimum of 6 months (up to 12 months) outside of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to gain new perspectives and collaborate internationally.
    • Propose new transformative experiences, collaborations, or methodologies.
    • Maintain active UBC student registration during the travel/funding period.

Offered Benefits

Awards of up to $50,000 will be provided for 6 to 12 months of study or research abroad. Funds can cover travel expenses, living costs, educational fees, and related expenses.

Applicants must submit a detailed application outlining their proposed research or scholarly activities, including a justification for the necessity of funding and a budget template detailing eligible expenses.
