The Irish Government, in partnership with the Engineering Institution of Zambia, has established the Frank Ferguson Fellowships for  Zambian candidates to study a master’s level engineering programme in Ireland for the academic year 2022/2023.

The programme aims to nurture future leaders, develop an in-country capacity to achieve national SDG goals, and build positive relationships with Ireland. The programme is intended to support graduates on their return home, through the skills they develop, to contribute to capacity building in their home countries and to become one of the next generations of leaders in their respective fields.

The Ireland Fellows Programme aligns with the Irish Government’s commitment to Global Ireland and the national implementation plan for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ireland’s new Policy for International Development, and Ireland’s International Education Strategy.

Why should you apply for this programme? The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Irish government directs and manages the Programme. The Embassy in each eligible country oversees the program. The Irish Council encourages implementing programmes for international students in Ireland (ICOS). The Ireland Fellows Programme enables early to mid-career professionals from eligible countries with leadership potential to benefit from a prestigious, world-class, quality education contributing to capacity building. It offers selected students the opportunity to undertake a fully funded one-year master’s level program at a higher education institution (HEI) in Ireland.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Zambia.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: Master’s degree in Master of Civil engineering (1MEC1), MSc in Mechanical Engineering (1MSME1), ME in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (1MEEE1), MSc in Marine and Freshwater Resources, Management (1MFR1).
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Be a resident national of Zambia.
  • Have a minimum of three years’ substantial work experience that is directly relevant to your proposed Programme of study, depending on the country.
  • Be a member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia.
  • Hold a Degree in Engineering or related discipline with Merit or higher from an accredited and government-recognized higher education institution.
  • Be applying to commence a new program at the Master’s level in Ireland no sooner than August 2023.
  • Be able to demonstrate the following: leadership abilities and aspirations; a commitment to the achievement of the SDGs within your own country; and a commitment to contribute to building positive relationships with Ireland.
  • Have identified and selected three programs relevant to your academic and professional background from the list of engineering programmes at NUI Galway.
  • Have a clear understanding of the academic and English language proficiencies required for all programmes chosen.
  • Be able to take up the Fellowship in the academic year 2023/2024.

Offered Benefits

The Ireland Fellows Programme will cover programme fees, flights, accommodation, living costs, visa application fees, medical and travel insurance, economy flights to and from Ireland, and the Irish residence permit fee. Allowances include the following:

  • Settling-in funding towards items needed on arrival in Ireland;
  • A completion and departure allowance at the end of the study period;
  • A monthly living stipend of €650 (subject to review);
  • Student accommodation is arranged and paid for trimesters 1 and 2, and in trimester three, a monthly accommodation stipend of €650-€850 depending on location in Ireland.

  • How to Apply: The students must first apply for admission to an Ireland Fellows Programme of their choice. A  fellowship application form must be completed and submitted separately.
  • Applications must be typed and submitted an email to the Embassy of Ireland, Zambia, at the following email address: , with “Frank Ferguson” in the subject line.
  • The application form can be submitted as a Microsoft Word (.docx) file or PDF.
  • Supporting Documents: The Stage 1 process is a preliminary application that seeks information under the headings detailed below and requires you to submit a scanned copy of the following documents with your application form:
  • Passport
  • Undergraduate degree award certificate;
  • Final degree academic transcripts.
  • Current CV
  • Letters of academic references
  • One recent passport-sized photograph
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a required scanned copy of their undergraduate degree award certificate and their undergraduate degree academic transcript indicating their final grade.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency tests:
  • IELTS – 6.5
