FLOODRisk - The Erasmus Mundus Programme in Flood Risk Management for Master

  •  Master
  •   Germany, Netherlands, Pakistan, Slovenia, Spain
  • $$  Not Funded

The unique 2-year FLOODRisk master programme integrates science, engineering and socioeconomic topics through a range of courses taught by leading experts at four European universities: Technical University of Dresden (Germany), UNESCO-IHE (Netherlands), Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). Successful students graduate with MSc degrees from TU Dresden, UNESCO-IHE and the Technical University of Catalonia.

FLOODING: A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Integrated flood risk management aims to reduce the human and socio-economic losses caused by flooding while taking into account the social, economic and ecological benefits from floods and the use of flood plains or coastal zones. The need for the adoption of a holistic integrated approach to managing flood risks has been reflected in the Flood Directive of the European Parliament. Existing masters programmes on floods offered in the European Union cover many technical aspects but lack integration. This programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics - from drivers and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment and is therefore an important advance in water education for Europe.

Semester 1 - TU Dresden, Germany

The programme starts with the first semester at TUD, where students take either non-engineering or engineering subjects to complement their background and build a solid foundation for everyone. A fieldtrip to flood-prone areas is organised.

Semester 2 - UNESCO-IHE, Netherlands

At UNESCO-IHE the students join IHE's Hydroinformatics programme, focussing on different types of modelling. On real case studies students learn how to apply and integrate various types of modelling and decision support systems. An international fieldtrip is offered as well.

Semester 3 - UPC, Spain and University of Ljubljana, Slovenia

During the third semester the students take more specialised modules, such as Debris Flow and Coastal Flooding (including fieldtrips). The last part of the third semester is conducted at University of Ljubljana where the students study spatial planning and socio-economic and institutional frameworks for flood risk management.

Semester 4 - Research thesis

During the thesis phase the students, while remaining associated with one partner, may occasionally carry out the research together with an industrial partner (which may be an Associated Member or not).
