Following in 2005 a call for application by the European Commission, the Consortium of the Joint Master’s course in "Global Studies – A European perspective" came into existence and in 2010 funding was approved for a further 5 years. The founding members of the European Master in Global Studies (EMGS) Consortium comprised besides the University of Leipzig three leading European universities, namely the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), the University of Vienna (Austria) and the University of Wroclaw (Poland).

Students choosing the programme study at two different European universities, at each for one academic year. After having successful completed the programme they are able to analyze processes of globalization in various academic ways and are thus well-prepared for both, academic positions dealing with global phenomena and jobs in supranational agencies and non-governmental organizations, as they are ready to work as intercultural mediators and in the fields of development cooperation, economy, management and beyond.

The EMGS-consortium holds a winter school and a summer school every year, which consists of workshops and lectures offered by the teaching staff of all our Consortium universities. During these events student groups from the different places come together to get to know their colleagues and to experience the transnationality of their study programm.

Erasmus Mundus European Master in Global Studies Founded in 1365, Universität Wien (University of Vienna) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Vienna (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft and Forschung, Österreich (Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, Austria), Universität Wien (UNIVIE) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: over-45,000 students) coeducational higher education institution. Universität Wien (UNIVIE) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Erasmus Mundus Grants

Under Action 1 of Erasmus Mundus, the EU Commission offers scholarships to selected highly qualified students. This scholarship covers for the complete tuition fees. Category A scholarships include a single travel allowance of € 8,000 and living allowance of € 1,000 per month whereas Category B scholarships include a single travel allowance of € 3,000 and living allowance of € 500 per month. All applications arriving by the deadline (December 1st of each year) at the office in Leipzig are automatically taken into consideration for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Erasmus Scholarships (for non-Erasmus Mundus grant holders)

Students not receiving an Eramus Mundus scholarship and studying at the universities of Leipzig, Roskilde, Vienna and Wroclaw can also apply for up to one year for an Erasmus grant that is approx. € 150 a month.

Application is possible only for the second year in the programme.
