This post will remain open until a suitable candidate is found and we recommend you apply as soon as possible.

Corrosion is a natural process that costs the world economy around $3 trillion per annum. Much can be done to remediate the process, through careful design and selection of materials.

Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between a metal and its environment, involving an anode, a cathode, electrical conduction, and an electrolyte. By removing one of these, corrosion can be stopped.

The local environment has considerable influence on the rate and scale of corrosion. This research aims to examine the local environment at various parts of the Port Talbot Integrated Steel Works. High Chloride levels from the sea and Carbon particles from the works accelerate the corrosion of structures and plant. By understanding the local conditions, it will be possible to design and select coatings and treatments that arrest corrosion activity, improving the lifespan of the plant and delivering cost savings to the business.

It is envisaged the successful candidate will spend a large portion of their time on plant making chemical and physical measurements.

Eligibility Criteria

We welcome applications from candidates with an Engineering or Physical Science degree (minimum level 2:1), or a combination of degree and equivalent relevant experience to the same level, to join the M2A community of research engineers.
