ELbM Scholarships for African Students in South Africa Established in 1918, Universiteit Stellenbosch (University of Stellenbosch) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the large town of Stellenbosch (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), Western Cape. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Tygerberg, Bellville, Saldanha.   • Northern: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, and Morocco
  • Southern: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe
  • Western: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for master’s and PhD study in the fields of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, and Biomaterials/Biomedical Engineering in one of the following partner institutes:
  • Botswana International University of Science & Technology, (BIUST), Botswana
  • Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, (FUPRE), Nigeria
  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT), Kenya
  • Stellenbosch University (SU), South Africa
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Each student target group has its own eligibility criteria.
  • Applicants for degree-seeking scholarships at Stellenbosch must apply to both the university and the Department of Industrial Engineering between 1st March to 31st August of each year of application
  • Stellenbosch University requires all degree-seeking scholarship applicants to pass the entrance examination prior to admission.
  • All credit-seeking scholarship applicants, in consultation with supervisors from both home and host institutions, must provide a detailed research plan/study plan and budget for approval in the host institution to ensure that the required work can be undertaken.
  • All applicants for staff scholarships, in consultation with the host institution’s collaborator, must provide a detailed research plan and budget prior to arrival for approval to ensure that the required work can be undertaken.
  • Target Group 1 (TG1) can be defined as African nationals and/or residents registered or having obtained a degree in one of the Higher Education Institutions that is a member of the ELbM consortium.
  • Target Group 2 (TG2) can be defined as African nationals and residents (students) registered in Higher Education Institutions of African countries not included in the partnership, or who have obtained a Higher Education Institution degree or equivalent from an institution of these countries.

Offered Benefits

  • The ELbM consortium is committed to offering 50% of its scholarship to women and disadvantaged or marginalized groups.
  • In this ELbM scholarship call, a total of 22 scholarships comprising 12 Masters (9 credit seeking and 3 degree-seeking), 4 PhDs (3 credit seeking and 1 degree-seeking), and 6 Staff scholarships are available.
  • The ELbM scholarship includes a round trip-air ticket and visa costs, participation costs such as tuition fees, registration and service fees, Insurance (Health, accident, travel), settling-in allowance, monthly subsistence allowance, and a contribution towards the research costs associated with student mobility of 10 months or longer.

Master Scholarships:

  • Participation Costs (per academic year): €3,500
  • Subsistence Allowance (per month): €600
  • Research Costs (per academic year): €600
  • Insurance costs (per month): €75
  • Duration: Max 24 months

PhD Scholarships:

  • Participation Costs (per academic year): €2,000
  • Subsistence Allowance (per month): €900
  • Research Costs (per academic year): €600
  • Insurance costs (per month): €75
  • Duration: Max 24 months

Staff Scholarships:

  • Subsistence Allowance (per month): €1200
  • Insurance costs (per month): €75
  • Duration: Max 24 months

  • How to Apply: In order to apply for a scholarship, applicants must apply for admission into one of the partner institutes. Applicants can apply for scholarships by completing an online application.
  • Supporting Documents: Applicants must submit all the documents as required by the host Institutions.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants can visit the host Institutions to meet the admission criteria.
  • Language Requirement: Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of the language of the courses in the host Institutions.
