The European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) is excited to announce the opening of applications for the ECCO Global Grant 2025.

To be eligible for the Grant, applicants must submit an original research project proposal through the ECCO Fellowships and Grants Online Submission Pages. The project group must include a Project Coordinator from an ECCO Country Member and at least one Principal Investigator from a low- or lower-middle income country.Founded in 2001, the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) is a leading non-profit dedicated to improving the care of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Based in Europe, it’s the world’s largest forum for IBD specialists, with 35 member states and global outreach. ECCO advances IBD management through international guidelines, education, research, and collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Researchers affiliated with institutions in ECCO Country Members and low- or lower-middle-income countries.

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The grant will support research projects related to IBD, including but not limited to IBD pathogenesis (environmental impact, genetics), epidemiology, and clinical care.

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:

    • Submit an original research project proposal via the ECCO Fellowships and Grants Online Submission Pages.

    • Form a project group with:

      • A Principal Investigator at each participating institution.

      • At least one Principal Investigator from a low- or lower-middle-income country.

      • A Project Coordinator from an ECCO Country Member (who may also be a Principal Investigator).

    • All project group members from ECCO Country Members must be ECCO Members at the time of submission.

    • Each department may submit only one application per ECCO Award category per call.

    • ECCO Governing Board and Scientific Committee members are not eligible to apply.

    • The budget must allocate at least 50% of the total funding to participating institutions in low- or lower-middle-income countries.

    • Compliance with the application stages: Letter of Intent by May 5, 2025, and full proposal by September 10, 2025.

Offered Benefits

  • The grant provides a total of EUR 300,000, intended to cover direct project costs including salaries, equipment, research consumables, project travel, and institutional support.

  • The funding is split into two payments: 50% pre-financing in January 2026 and 50% after submission of an interim report in 2027.

  • Grant recipients will receive a certificate at the ECCO annual congress and have their project results showcased through ECCO Channels and the JCC Congress Abstract book.

  • Grantees are also encouraged to present their findings at the ECCO Congress and to submit their final work to the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis (JCC).

Application Process

  • Submit a Letter of Intent (max. 2 pages) via the ECCO Fellowships and Grants Online Submission Pages by May 5, 2025.

  • If selected, submit a full project proposal by September 10, 2025.

  • Applicants should ensure they use the ECCO-provided forms for both submission stages.

  • Required documents include project abstracts, budget outlines, letters of commitment from participating institutions, and IRB approvals if available.
