The University of Galway, with support from the Michael Guinee Charitable Foundation, is pleased to announce the launch of the Dr. Karen Guinee Scholarship for first-year Medicine students (GY501). Valued at €6,250 per year for the full duration of the degree, this scholarship aims to support students who face financial or personal obstacles in accessing higher education.

Eligibility for the Scholarship is open to students entering Year 1 of the GY501 Undergraduate Medicine program at the University of Galway, either on the 5-year or 6-year degree track. Applicants must submit a personal statement highlighting financial or personal obstacles to education and provide a reference letter from their high school Principal or Vice Principal.

Eligibility Criteria

  • University or Organization: University of Galway / Michael Guinee Charitable Foundation

  • Department: School of Medicine

  • Course Level: Undergraduate (Medicine, GY501 – 5-year or 6-year degree)

  • Award: €6,250 per year for the duration of the undergraduate degree

  • Access Mode: Online application

  • Number of Awards: One annually (renewable for the full duration of the degree)

  • Nationality: Domestic and international

  • The award can be taken in: Ireland

Application Process

  • Complete the official application form (link coming soon).

  • Submit a personal statement (500 words) covering academic achievements, career aspirations, and obstacles faced.

  • Provide a reference letter from the high school Principal or Vice Principal.

  • Application deadline: Friday, 10th October 2025 (TBD).

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.
