Dr Judith Johnston Scholarship in Geography is now currently open for the academic year 2024/2025 at the University of Otago. This scholarship is to support and encourage female students to pursue advanced studies in Geography.

The primary aim of the Dr Judith Johnston Scholarship in Geography is to promote female enrolment in 200- and 300-level Geography courses at the University of Otago. This scholarship is designed to assist a female student who, without this financial support, would struggle to afford to continue or return to their studies. The scholarship will be awarded annually to one female undergraduate Geography student who, without the benefit of an entrance scholarship, would find it too difficult to afford to (return to) study.The University of Otago is a prestigious institution known for its academic excellence, outstanding student experience, and global reputation. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: New Zealand
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the University of Otago’s Geography department.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand Residence Class Visa Holder.
  • Be enrolled as female at the University of Otago.
  • Be enrolled (or planning to enrol) in a major or minor in Geography in any undergraduate programme in the intended year of tenure.
  • Be enrolled (or planning to enrol) in two or more 200- or 300-level papers in Geography in the intended year of tenure.
  • Be disadvantaged in the pursuit of their studies by financial or personal circumstances.
  • Not be in receipt of an entrance scholarship in the year of proposed tenure.

Selection Factors: The selection of the scholarship recipient will consider:

  • The degree of financial disadvantage or need evidenced by the applicant.
  • Previous academic achievement and potential for academic success.
  • The extent of financial support the applicant will (likely) receive from other scholarships or awards.
  • Preference will be given to applicants returning to study after a break of at least one year prior to the first year of their current programme of study.

Offered Benefits

The successful recipient of the Dr Judith Johnston Scholarship in Geography will receive an award of $5,000 to support their studies in Geography at the University of Otago.
