Basic courses in each of these fields (micro-, macroeconomics, applied econometrics) are taught during the winter semester. During the summer semester, the programme includes advanced-level courses on specialised topics such as international macroeconomics, labour economics, mechanism design and contract theory. It may also include compact courses, some of which are taught by visiting professors.
Students in their second year at the Bonn Graduate School of Economics may continue their studies in Bonn or spend the year at one of the other EDP institutions (European Doctoral Programme in Quantitative Economics). In either case, they begin writing their thesis. In Bonn, they present their results in weekly workshops and are expected to attend a weekly seminar.
After the second year, students continue writing their thesis for eventual submission to the Faculty of Law and Economics. Those who are successful receive the degree of Dr rer pol, in accordance with the regulations of the faculty.
Eligibility Criteria
Outstanding (top 10%) students with a Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) in economics or related fields, such as mathematics, statistics, business administration, accounting and finance, are encouraged to apply for admission to the BGSE.
Applicants must be proficient in the use of mathematical tools.

- academic transcripts
- two confidential letters (formless) of recommendation from academic teachers
- TOEFL or IELTS score report if English is not your first language or if the language of instruction of your previous degree is not English (curriculum must have been taught exclusively in English)
- GRE score report (General Test Format).
Offered Benefits
Students starting with a master degree can expect to receive a monthly grant of € 1103 until the 8th semester.
Students starting with a bachelor degree can expect to receive a monthly grant of € 800 for the first two semesters, followed by a grant of € 1103 until the 8th semester.
Some of our international students receive grants by the German Academic Exchange Service. These grants amount to € 1000 but include health insurance and come with the advantage of a strong international network.
