For making education more affordable for students, the African Academy of Sciences is offering the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science (DELTAS) Awards.

This is a long term programme for students bright career which is supporting collaborative teams to conduct health research. It offers training fellowships, and invest in research infrastructure.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: African countries students are eligible to apply for this opportunity.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The grant is available for the research study program.
  • Admissible Criteria: To apply for this program, students must meet the following criteria:

Institutional Eligibility

1) Lead Institutions

  • Applicants must be a citizen of Africa,
  • Students should have strong collaborative links to institutional partners and collaborators within sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Maghreb regions
  • Be a legal entity

2) Partners and Collaborating Institutions

  • A partner is an institution that will carry out a well-defined work package and will receive a significant budget and be GFGP compliant. Partner institutions are required to be compliant at the GFGP Silver Level Standard, at the start of the grant, and to commit to work towards achieving the gold status or higher in due course.
  • A collaborator can be other institutions that support the delivery of the research objectives but are not receiving budgets
  • Eligible institutions will typically be universities or research institutions, which are legal entities.

Individual Eligibility

1) A lead applicant must:

    • Be able to demonstrate a strong personal link to an African country through citizenship or legal residency.
    • Be an established research leader of international stature as demonstrated by publications and leadership record;
    • Be based at the Lead Institution for the duration of the grant and to be responsible for leading the overall management of the programme;
    • Have a primary academic affiliation to the Lead Institution; and

2) Co-applicants: Co-applicants are named individuals who represent Institutional Partners on the programme. Co-applicants and Institutional Partners may be based at any sub-Saharan, North Africa or Maghreb region or international location; however, the focus of the programme must remain in Africa.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: For applying for this educational grant, students first have to take admission in a research study program at the African Academy of Sciences. After being enrolled, you will be eligible to apply for the bursary.
  • Supporting Documents: If you wish to apply, you are needed to submit a cover letter, a transcript, photographs, two letters of recommendation, a resume, and all the previous necessary mark-sheets.
  • Admission Requirements:  For being admitted, claimants need to meet the general entry requirements of the university.
  • Language Requirement: Aspirants have to demonstrate that they have the brilliance to read, write and speak in English.
