The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship offers valuable financial support and national recognition for research that drives real impact in gender equity and inclusion. It’s an opportunity to honour a pioneering advocate, advance your academic career, and contribute meaningfully to social change in Australia.

This scholarship supports current master’s or doctoral research students enrolled at any Australian university whose research contributes to gender equity across diverse fields, including education, health, engineering, science, law, communications, and social sciences.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Open to:

    • Australian citizens

    • Permanent residents

    • Permanent humanitarian visa holders

    • New Zealand citizens

    • International students (only for Scholarship 2)

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded to students undertaking research in fields including (but not limited to):

    • Employment

    • Education

    • Health

    • Communications

    • Engineering

    • Science

    • Business

    • Law

    • Arts and Humanities

    • Social Sciences

    • Medical and Health Sciences

  • Admissible Criteria: Applicants must:

    • Be currently enrolled (full-time or part-time) in a research degree (PhD, Professional Doctorate, or MPhil) at an Australian university

    • Have completed at least the first milestone of their research degree (as defined by their university)

    • Choose one or both of the following options when applying:

      • Scholarship 1: Research must focus on women and gender equity; open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, humanitarian visa holders and NZ citizens.

      • Scholarship 2: Research must aim to advance gender equity and inclusion in Australia; open to all the above, plus international students.

Offered Benefits

Two successful applicants will each receive a $10,000 one-off payment to support their research on gender equity and inclusion in Australia.

Application Process

  • Applications open in mid-June and close on 31 July 2025.

  • Submit a single online application form indicating whether you’re applying for:

    • Scholarship 1

    • Scholarship 2

    • Or both

  • Required documents include:

    • Research proposal summary

    • Academic transcript

    • Research background

    • Contact details of two referees

Note: Separate applications are not needed for each scholarship.
