The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is seeking talented recent graduates for its Gaither Junior Fellows Program. This paid fellowship offers a unique opportunity to work with leading experts in areas like democracy, climate policy, and international security. The program is open to graduating seniors or recent graduates, and you must be nominated by your university to apply.

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be graduating seniors or individuals who graduated within the past academic year. They must be nominated by their university, with each institution allowed up to two nominees. While U.S. citizenship is not required for students attending U.S. universities, all applicants must be eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the fellowship.The University of Washington Bothell (UW Bothell) is a public university located in Bothell, Washington, and is one of three campuses of the University of Washington system. Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: U.S. citizens or international students studying at U.S. universities (must be eligible to work in the U.S.).
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship is open to any field related to international affairs and the specific Carnegie research programs, such as democracy, nuclear policy, Middle East, or climate sustainability.
  • Admissible Criteria:
    • Graduating seniors or recent graduates within the past academic year.
    • Must be nominated by their university (up to 2 nominees per university).
    • Should demonstrate a serious career interest in international affairs, strong academic performance, and relevant skills such as language proficiency or quantitative analysis.

Offered Benefits

Selected fellows will work full-time in Washington, D.C., for 10-12 months, gaining hands-on experience in policy research, contributing to publications, and engaging in meetings with high-level officials, scholars, and activists in various areas of international affairs.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted through the university’s designated nominating official. Applicants should submit an online application form, a one-page personal essay, a resume, unofficial transcripts, a 3-page analytical essay, and two letters of recommendation. Each applicant must select one program area and respond to the corresponding essay prompt.

    • Brief biographical information
    • One-page or less (double-spaced) essay on why the applicant would like to become a junior fellow
    • 1-2 page resume
    • Unofficial transcripts
    • Thought Piece Essay: An essay of no more than three (3) typewritten, double-spaced pages on one of the topics listed below. These topics are intended to test skills in analysis, logic, and written expression. The essay should be analytical thought pieces, NOT research papers. Students should submit an essay related to their primary research program interests, although the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program may ultimately select an applicant for a program outside of his/her designated primary interest or make an assignment to more than one program.
