Boehringer Ingelheim Fund Travel Allowances for research

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fund is a public foundation of civil law. The purpose of the foundation is to promote biomedical basic research. This promotion aims to contribute to explaining fundamental phenomena of human life. Examinations of plants and prokaryotes will only be sponsored if they are of general biological importance. To advance research, the foundation awards travel scholarships to doctoral candidates and post-docs for a period of up to three months. A prerequisite is that the home university continues to pay the scholarship holder's salary and the research costs are covered by the training institute during this period. The scholarship therefore only includes the costs of travel, accommodation and a supplementary allowance. In their applications, applicants must explain why they would like to participate in the programme and how it will further their research.

Eligibility Criteria

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards travel grants to European citizens working in Europe and overseas, and to non-European citizens who perform their MD, PhD or postdoctoral project in Europe, or will use the travel grant to work in Europe. Applicants must pursue an experimental project in basic biomedical research and belong to one of the following groups of junior scientists:

  • PhD students or medical students pursuing an experimental doctoral thesis who are not older than 30 years of age;

  • postdocs who are pursuing a particular research project who are not older than 32 years of age;

  • graduates from abroad who have applied for a PhD project, but who have not yet worked with their potential PhD supervisor.

We do not support

  • Attendance of conferences, symposia and workshops without practical training (if you are a BIF fellow, please refer to Personal Support);

  • clinical electives or practical courses during university education;

  • clinical studies;

  • applied research, such as diagnostic, biotechnological and pharmaceutical development or studies on the course of diseases or the treatment of symptoms;

  • botanical and prokaryotic investigations unless they are of general biological importance;

  • attendance of courses organized by companies.

Offered Benefits

On accepting the travel grant, the grant holder agrees to the following conditions

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds does not intervene in the work of its grant holders who in turn are obligated to make proper use of the allocated funds. If a grant holder changes the subject, length or location of the planned training or is unable to perform the training, he/she must inform the foundation immediately. The foundation can then adjust the grant accordingly.

The awarded grant sum is based on the information provided in the application. The grant holder is obligated to inform the foundation about any changes in his/her financial circumstances so that the foundation can adjust the size of the grant.

A Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds travel grant may not be held while receiving a grant from another institution covering the entire costs of the course applied for, or - in case of laboratory stays – while receiving another grant assisting with costs for travel or accommodation.

Travel grants of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds do not constitute any form of employment. In Germany (EStG § 3 No. 44), and in countries that maintain a double-taxation agreement with Germany, travel grants are exempt from tax. A travel grant is not considered to be remuneration as defined by Article 14 of the German Social Law IV and is therefore not liable to social insurance. Provision of laws governing formation of capital, saving premiums and residential building premiums do not apply.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds does not provide any kind of insurance for its grant holders. They must insure themselves against any possible costs and consequences caused by illness, accident, personal liability, etc.
