Biosciences / Aquaculture: Fully Funded KESS II MRes Scholarship: From Waste To Feed
*This scholarships is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.*
Start date: October 2019
Aquaculture – the production of aquatic organisms is a growing industry (7% year). It secures many jobs worldwide in areas as diverse as: life support systems technology (e.g. waste water treatment); engineering (e.g. recirculating aquaculture systems in land and innovative open systems offshore); feed technology (e.g. production of sustainable feed). Most of the key innovations in aquaculture aim to optimize production (e.g. improve feed conversion ratio) and minimize externalities (e.g. eutrophication, escapees, disease outbreaks).
This collaboration aims to address two key challenges:
· Waste water treatment and
· Sustainable production of healthy fish without fish oil in a circular economy context.
Based at the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research (CSAR), this is a collaborative project with Power & Water.
Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, as well as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to complete the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for each KESS II scholar and is based on a 40 credit award.
