The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Academy that seeks to stimulate the production of scholarly work in international human rights law.The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law is proud to request the submission of papers for the Human Rights Essay Award.

American University Human Rights Essay - Fully-funded to Washington D.C. USA Established in 1782, Washington College is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the rural setting of the small town of Chestertown (population range of 2,500-9,999 inhabitants), Maryland. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Washington College is a very small (uniRank enrollment range: 1,000-1,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Washington College offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 237 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 50-60% making this US higher education organization a averagely selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • This Awards is open to all lawyers around the world regardless of their nationality!

  • ONLY participants with a law degree Juris Doctor, (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) o equivalent by the submission due date are eligible to enter the competition. 

  • Shall have a demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law.  

  • Have the flexibility to choose any subject related to the 2022 topic: ¨Climate Change and Human Rights: Impacts, Responsibilities, and Opportunities. ¨

  • Shall remember the essay must be an academic article with proper citations.

*In 2021 the Program of Advanced Studies in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law was held virtually due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Academy reserves the right to determine if the 2022 Program will be held virtually.
