New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Alex Lindsay Awards


New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is delighted to offer Alex Lindsay Awards for New Zealand students. The programme is available for the academic session 2022-2023.

The award aims to support young musicians studying with the aim of pursuing an orchestral career. The Giese flute grant and Michael Monaghan award are also administered by the trustees of the Alex Lindsay Award.

A fine programme for students to get educational funds in New Zealand.The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is a symphony orchestra based in Wellington, New Zealand. The national orchestra of New Zealand, the NZSO, is an autonomous Crown entity owned by the Government of New Zealand, per the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Act 2004. It also performs in Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in any subject offered by the university
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • You play an orchestral instrument
  • You are under 25 years of age on 30 September
  • You are a New Zealand Citizen or a Permanent Resident

Offered Benefits

Successfully selected candidates will be granted funds above $200,000 at New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: To apply, you need to complete the  application form and attach to your application form. The budget  document is an audio recording comprising the exposition of a concerto and orchestral excerpts provided below. Included in the Alex Lindsay Award form is the application for the Giese Flute Grant, which does not require an audition.
  • Supporting Documents: Please see below an applicant’s checklist of all the materials you need to apply.
  • A completed Application Form for the Alex Lindsay Award/Giese Flute Grant
  • A completed Budget of your proposed expenses:
  • A named digital recording of the exposition of a concerto (unaccompanied).
  • Orchestral excerpts for your instrument with timings for each audio file.
  • Two references have been written within the last 12 months.
  • A full curriculum vitae including:
  • future study plans
  • long-term career aspirations
  • Proof of citizenship or permanent residency if you were born outside of NZ
  •  Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a previous degree certificate with relevant marks.
  • Language Requirement: The applicants must meet be proficient in the English language.
