Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy Graduate School of Law International Scholarships in Germany for PhD Founded in 1919, Universität Hamburg (University of Hamburg) is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Hamburg (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung, Hamburg (Authority for Science, Research and Equality, Hamburg), Universität Hamburg (UHH) is a very large (uniRank enrollment range: 35,000-39,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.   • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for doctoral programs in law.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be appropriate, the applicants must meet all the given criteria:
  • International applicants are eligible.
  • Applications of graduates from both legal studies and other disciplines who are keen to produce ambitious doctoral work in an excellent research environment.
  • Doctoral candidates from all over the world ensure the continued challenge of intellectual diversity and contribute to the program’s international orientation.
  • Applicants who appear to have an outstanding record in earlier higher education and the skills and commitment to pursue research to the highest level, indicated by an excellent law degree or a non-legal research-orientated master’s degree (in particular in business sciences, political sciences or sociology).
  • Academic excellence, usually proven by an outstanding degree (cf. § 3 PromO AMBSL) in a law degree (first legal examination / LL.M.) or in a non-law research-oriented master’s program (especially in economics, political science, sociology)
  • A relevant PhD project associated with one of the graduate school or faculty structured programs or contributing to the general academic program.
  • An application is possible both before a potential supervisor is contacted and after initial contact has already been made. For applicants who have not previously spoken to a professor, a meeting will be arranged after successful admission to discuss project ideas.

Offered Benefits

The graduate school also awards a number of scholarships for this period of time.

  • The scholarships are awarded for a maximum of three year based on the academic excellence of the applicants and are intended to enable them to write a dissertation and participate in the academic program.
  • The scholarship recipients from the Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy Graduate School of Law receive a monthly scholarship of €1,150 plus an allowance of €215 for material costs, if applicable.
  • If needed, a childcare supplement can be arranged. Doctoral students at the Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy Graduate School of Law do not pay any tuition fees.

  • Exposé of the possible dissertation project (max. four pages)

  • Two recommendations from professors as proof of academic aptitude for doctoral studies
  • Copy of your general university entrance qualification (does not apply to foreign candidates)
  • Copies of certificates from the state examination/state examinations or comparable degrees and a transcript of records
  • if applicable, existing proof of performance of seminar papers and homework in focus areas in copy
  • If necessary, proof of language proficiency in German or English: Applicants with a degree from a foreign university whose native language is not German and who wish to complete their doctoral work in German must demonstrate sufficient language skills by passing the German language test for university entrance (DSH) or equivalent evidence. If the doctoral work is to be carried out in English.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a master’s degree in law (first legal examination / LL.M.) or in a non-law research-oriented master’s program. PhD students write a doctoral thesis over a period of three years.
  • The best applicants will be invited to a personal interview (approx. March/April).
  • Language Requirement: Students who are not native speakers and want to write their dissertation in German or English must prove their language level by means of recognized certificates. The knowledge of the English language must be proven at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This can be done through TOEFL ibT (at least 100 points), IELTS (at least 7 points) or TOEIC (at least 945 points)
  • German: TestDAF or DSH; English: a certificate that proves the C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Test results of at least 100 points in the TOEFL, 7 points in the IELTS and 945 points in the TOEIC are required. The TOEFL DI code is 2258.
