The African Leadership Forum (ALF) 2025 is hosting a Youth Leadership Competition for African citizens aged 18-25. Participants are invited to submit an essay answering the question, “If you were an African leader, how would you accelerate the implementation of SDGs on the continent?” The competition aims to engage the next generation of leaders in shaping Africa’s future. Winners will receive up to USD $2,000, have their posters displayed at ALF 2025, and be invited to the ALF Gala Dinner in Kampala, Uganda.

The competition is open to African citizens, including those in the diaspora, aged 18 to 25 years. Applicants must submit an original essay (500-700 words) responding to the question: If you were an African leader, how would you accelerate the implementation of SDGs on the continent? The essay must be typed in Arial font size 11, single-spaced, with 1-inch margins and submitted as a Microsoft Word document. A signed originality statement is also required.

UONGOZI Institute is a leadership development organization based in Tanzania, dedicated to advancing sustainable development across Africa through capacity building, policy research, and dialogue. Established in 2010, the institute provides training programs, executive education, and forums that empower current and future leaders to drive impactful change. It focuses on governance, strategic leadership, and sustainable development, equipping leaders with the skills and knowledge to address Africa’s challenges.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All African nations (including the diaspora)
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The competition focuses on leadership and sustainable development in Africa.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:
    • Be African citizens between the ages of 18 and 25.
    • Submit an original essay answering: If you were an African leader, how would you accelerate the implementation of SDGs on the continent?”
    • Ensure the essay is between 500-700 words, typed in Arial font size 11, single-spaced, with 1-inch margins.
    • Submit a written statement of originality and ownership of intellectual property rights.

Offered Benefits

  • A grand prize of USD $2,000 will be awarded to the overall winner, who will read their essay at the ALF Gala Dinner.
  • Up to five winners will be selected and asked to create posters showcasing their ideas, which will be displayed at ALF 2025.
  • Winners will receive awards at a prize-giving ceremony attended by African leaders from the public, private, and third sectors.
  • Selected winners from outside Uganda will have their travel, visa, airfare, and accommodation covered by UONGOZI Institute.

Application Process

  • Submit the essay in a Microsoft Word document format.
  • Attach a signed originality statement (template available for download).
  • Applicants must complete the online application form for achieving this award.
