Africa Thesis Awards in Netherlands for Master


With an aim to encourage students’ research and writing on African topics and to promote the study of African cultures and societies, the African Studies Centre Leiden has decided to award the African Thesis Award for the academic year 2022-2023.

The ASC Leiden is offering this scholarship application exclusively to research students that possess a completed master thesis on an African continent or in the Netherlands. Selected candidates will be entitled to receive € 500 and have their winning thesis published in the ASCL’s African Studies Collection.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: Africa.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: The applicants can apply for a research programme offered at the ASC Leiden.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • The applicants must be master’s students who
  • The applicants in the Netherlands must have received an 8 out of 10 or above.
  • International or applicants from non-Dutch universities must have a grade of A (or equivalent).

Offered Benefits

The successfully selected candidates will be provided a prize of € 500 and publication of the winning thesis in the ASCL’s African Studies Collection.

Application Process

  • How to Apply: The applicants must first apply for admission, which can be done online. Then, to apply for the scholarship programme students must send the supporting documents to .
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • A digital version of the thesis in PDF
  • A summary (max. 300 words)
  • A signed letter of recommendation from the student’s supervisor, detailing the quality of the thesis and an explanation of the grade, and details of the educational institution from which the student has graduated
  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must have completed a master’s thesis at an African university or college.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency tests:
  • IELTS – 7.0
  • TOEFL – 100
  • C1 Advanced (former CAE) – 185
