AfOx 2023 Visiting Fellowship Programme for African Students


The AfOx Visiting Fellowship Programme is designed to allow exceptional African researchers to build international networks and focus on a project of their choice in collaboration with Oxford-based scholars. The Fellowship is open to researchers across all academic fields. Fellows will be affiliated with the University of Oxford for 12 months,  including ten months of virtual engagement and a two month in-person visit to Oxford during Trinity Term.

During the Fellowship, AfOx Fellows are associated with a Department and a College within the University. Fellows can apply to work with scholars based in any of the University’s departments. AfOx is a cross-university platform which supports collaboration across all the departments at Oxford University. Learn more about the Collegiate University system at Oxford here.

AfOx 2023 Visiting Fellowship Programme for African Students Founded in 1096, University of Oxford is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large town of Oxford (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), South East England. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, University of Oxford is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Oxford offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. This 923 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 20-30% making this UK higher education organization a very selective institution. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Fellowship is open to researchers across all academic fields. 
  • Applicants must have an Oxford-based researcher named as their collaborator on their application.
  • Legal resident of an African country holding an appointment in an African academic or research institution with an existing collaboration with Oxford or in contact with a potential collaborator at Oxford.

Offered Benefits

  • The Fellows appointed will be provided with an en-suite, single occupancy study bedroom with all meals provided in the host College.
  • A temporary University card for and temporary membership to the college Senior Common Room will be granted for the period of residency.
  • The fellowship will also include airfare, visa fee and a maintenance allowance for incidental expenses.
