2017 Google Digital News Journalist Fellowships at the Reuters Institute, UK for Phd

The Reuters Institute is pleased to offer Google Digital News Journalist Fellowships to pursue a three, six or nine month’s research programme. Fellowship are open to mid-career journalists resident in one of the continental European countries which will be covered in the 2017 Reuters Institute Digital News Report namely; Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism marks the University of Oxford’s commitment to creating an international research centre in the comparative study of journalism. The Institute aims to serve as the leading forum for a productive engagement between scholars from a wide range of disciplines and the practitioners of journalism.

Journalists will be able to demonstrate a level of English that allows them to participate fully in the programme and write a research paper of publishable quality.

2017 Google Digital News Journalist Fellowships at the Reuters Institute, UK for Phd Founded in 1096, University of Oxford is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large town of Oxford (population range of 50,000-249,999 inhabitants), South East England. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, University of Oxford is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Oxford offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for fellowship:

  • Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience working as a journalist in any specialism. In rare cases, they will consider applicants if they have less than five years’ journalistic experience, but they must be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of expertise.
  • They will be able to demonstrate a level of English that allows them to participate fully in the programme and write a research paper of publishable quality.
  • They will be given priority if they are proposing a research project within one of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s areas of focus.

Offered Benefits

Awards may include travel expenses (including air travel economy class) and a modest living allowance. This arrangement is subject to variation. Spouses and partners (including with dependents) are welcome but under no circumstances will the Fellowship Programme pay the travel or living costs of visiting spouses or dependents. Fellows at the RISJ on Fellowships from Thomson Reuters Foundation, Gerda-Henkel, Wincott, and Saïd – Asfari will receive a monthly stipend of £1,500 from the RISJ for their living costs during their stay in Oxford, as well as covering travel costs within reason.

Application Process

The mode of application is online. Below is a list of the materials applicants will need to complete their application:

  • A full curriculum vitae
  • A personal statement outlining i) their journalistic values, ii) the major trends in the media landscape in which they work, and iii) a summary of what they think they would contribute to the Fellowship programme (no more than 500 words in total)
  • A statement of up to 1,000 words explaining their proposed research project
  • A reference from their employer, supporting their application and granting leave of absence
  • A second professional reference (e.g. former employer)
  • A sample of their work.
