The aim of the scholarship is to enable and encourage academically able students from any nationality.

14 SOAS Research Studentships for International Students in UK, 2017 for Phd Established in 1916, SOAS, University of London is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the metropolis of London (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, SOAS, University of London (SOAS) is a small (uniRank enrollment range: 5,000-5,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. SOAS, University of London (SOAS) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in several areas of study. Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must possess or expect to be awarded a Distinction in their Masters Degree from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK degree to be adjudged in the top rank by their referees and transcript.
  • Only new research students may apply: those already enrolled on a research degree programme at SOAS are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must have an offer of admission to a Research degree programme at SOAS by the time the scholarship selection process starts at SOAS. It is expected that the scholarships selection will start on 14 February 2017.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2017. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
  • Candidates currently completing a Masters degree are welcome to apply.
  • Open to Home/EU applicants and overseas applicants

Offered Benefits

Fourteen studentships (four for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, four for the Faculty of Language and Cultures and six for the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences) are available for students who are proposing to register full-time for a research degree at SOAS. The SOAS Research Studentships provide remission of tuition fees and a maintenance allowance of at least £16,296.

Application Process

Applicants must follow two steps:

  • STEP 1:  Apply for your programme by January 3, 2017

Applicants must submit a COMPLETE on-line application for admission.

Applicants must have an offer of admission to a Research degree programme at SOAS by the time the scholarship selection process starts at SOAS (It is expected that the scholarships selection will start on 14 February 2017). A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV, research proposal and a personal statement. The panel will be considering your scholarship application TOGETHER with your online application for admission.  Please note that complete application for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year.  You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

  • STEP 2:  Apply for the scholarship by 17:00 (UK local time) on January 31, 2017.
