The school offers a unique opportunity to attract talented undergraduate and master students worldwide. Applicants who have completed at least two years of university study in a Life Sciences related study are eligible to apply.Vienna BioCenter Summer School is a collaboration between five of Europe’s leading research institutes: CEMM, GMI, IMBA, IMP, and Max Perutz Labs. The Max Birnstiel Foundation generously sponsors it.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities from all around the world are eligible.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: A diverse range of research projects are available in Molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, bioinformatics, RNA biology, stem cells, and biochemistry.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • The summer school course is intended for undergraduate and Master students only.
  • The school welcomes applications from students (BA Hons, Master, MSc) from around the world who are undergraduates/master students and have completed at least two years of university study in a Life Sciences related study.
  • Although we do not have a strict age limit, students need to study for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, which means that students are normally relatively young.
  • Applicants need to be studying a degree in a Life Science related subject and have one of the following:
  • Completed at least two years of a University study (e.g., 2-3 years of a Bachelor (Hons) study or one year of a Master study – by June 30) as follows:
  • (i) In Year 3 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject
  • (ii) In Year 4 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject with an acceptance or intention to apply to a Master program (this will be checked later)
  • (iii) In Year 1 of a 2-year Master course, MSc in a Life Science related subject
  • (iv) In Year 2 of a US undergraduate Bachelor in a Life Science related subject
  • (v) In Year 2 of a 4-Year BTech (India) in a Life Science related subject
  • 3-months research experience
  • Good academic record
  • High level of English language
  • Evidence of enrolment in a university program for the current academic year and the next year (if possible)
  • Important information for MD applicants. MDs may only apply if they have completed 3-4 years of their studies and have relevant research experience. They must also intend to study a PhD in a Life Science related subject after completion of their current studies.

Offered Benefits

The Vienna BioCenter Summer School offers approximately 20 international undergraduate students a unique opportunity.

  • Successful applicants will receive accommodation, a travel allowance, and a stipend for the scholarship duration.
  • Selected fellows receive numerous benefits, e.g., free student accommodation, a stipend of 1400 euros after tax for the nine-week program, medical insurance, and others.
  • The school does not charge an application fee

Application Process

The program starts on the last Friday in June and finishes on the last Friday of August (or August 31) each year.

  • How to Apply: Interested students should complete the online application form. When applying, applicants will be asked to specify the names of three lab heads in their order of preference.
  • Supporting Documents: Evidence of enrolment and Proof of English language skills. Applicants must upload an enrolment certificate and transcript of studies and/or exam results for the last years of their course. Applicants must also upload proof of enrolment for the next academic year. If this is not possible, applicants should upload a personal statement with the programs they have/will apply for.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed at least two years of university study in a Life Sciences related study with 3-months of research experience, a good academic record, and high English language skills.
  • Language Requirement: The language of the program is English throughout. Proficiency in English is therefore required. A formal proof of competence in English (IELTS, CPE, or TOEFL) is recommended but not mandatory.
