Created in 2022 in memory of Helen Allen Stacey. This scholarship is for students in any of the following fields: Early Childhood Education, Personal Support Worker, Nursing, Medicine, or Journalism. It is renewable for up to 3 years, contingent upon satisfactory grades.

For 20 years, the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Scholarship Program has been helping students with hearing loss attend post-secondary schooling and meet their educational goals. It is supported by donations from Doreen Laszlo (spouse of Dr. Charles Laszlo), the estate of Helen Allen Stacey and CHHA Networks such as CHHA-North Shore, CHHA-NL and CHHA-YAN.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Applicants to this Scholarship Program must be either hard of hearing, deafened, or oral deaf. Support documentation is required. The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) generally accept the following terms:
    1. hard of hearing
      1. a person with any level of hearing loss, from mild to profound, whose primary method of communication is the spoken language
    2. deafened
      1. a person with a profound level of hearing loss acquired in adulthood (hearing loss occurred after learning oral communication)
    3. oral deaf
      1. a person with a profound level of hearing loss, occurring congenitally or with an onset early in life, whose primary method of communication is the spoken language.
  2. Students must be enrolled or planning to register for the fall semester in a full-time program as a first-time, returning, or mature student at a recognized post-secondary College or University.
  3. Previous scholarship winners can apply in successive years however they cannot receive the same scholarship more than once.
  4. An applicant must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident/landed immigrant, Convention refugee or protected person living in Canada, as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  5. Mature students will need to submit either transcript(s) for the past 3 years of most recent study or a minimum of 1 academic transcript and a statement (500 words or less) identifying the reason for the discontinuity and why they are returning to school.
  6. Field of study, year of the program, and location of residence may be a factor in the selection process for some scholarships.
  7. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after the selection has been made.
  8. The committee’s decision is final for all scholarships.

$1,500 will be awarded to the recipient of the award
