Joint A*STAR – King’s Fully-funded PhD Studentships in Biomedical Science Established in 1829, King's College London is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the urban setting of the metropolis of London (population range of over 5,000,000 inhabitants). Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, King's College London (KCL) is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 25,000-29,999 students) coeducational higher education institution.   • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for PhD (Postgraduate research) in the following subjects:
  • Biomedical Science: Structural biology, Stem cells, Health & Medicine, Psychology, Psychological Medicine, Psychiatry, Primary Health Care, Physiotherapy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pathogen, Nutrition, Neurobiology, Molecular biology, Microscopy, Microbiology, Mental Health Studies, Medicine and health-related studies, Medical and Molecular Genetics, Mechanical engineering, Life Sciences, International Mental Health, Infection, Immunology, Imaging, Health sciences, Global Mental Health, Genetics, Forensic Science, Electronic Engineering, Drugs, Drug Discovery Skills, Dentistry, Dental, Cellular biology, Cardiovascular, Cancer, Biophysics, Biomedical Research, Biomedical and health sciences, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Asthma, Anatomy and human sciences, Allergy, Ageing, Addiction studies.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the given criteria:
  • All projects are open to citizens from the UK, the EU, the USA, Canada, Latin America, and Australia.

Offered Benefits

All projects offer the opportunity to spend a minimum of 18 months and a maximum of 24 months at A*STAR in Singapore as part of the research and training program.

  • Each studentship is fully funded for four years, including tuition fees and a tax-free stipend in line with UKRI funding for research training (for the year 2022/23, this was set at £19,668).
  • A Research Training Student Grant (RTSG) will be provided for research consumables and for attending UK and international conferences.
  • At King’s College London, consumables allowance (1st year £5,000 and 4th year £2,000). The successful candidates will have both a King’s College London and an A*STAR Supervisor.
  • In addition, the student will be spending up to two years conducting their PhD research and training with an A*STAR Research Institute and Supervisor. During this time, A*STAR will offer the following:
  • One-time allowance comprising an airfare grant of S$1,500;
  • One-time settling-in allowance of S$1,000;
  • One-time computer allowance of S$800;
  • Monthly housing allowance of S$600;
  • Monthly stipend of S$2,700;
  • Conference allowance;
  • Medical insurance;
  • Miscellaneous research costs of the PhD work are covered by the A*STAR Research Entities.

Application Process

Projects available will fall within one of the following themes: 1) Cells, Molecules and the Basis of Health and Disease, and 2) Neuroscience and Mental Health.

  • Supporting Documents: A complete application should include the following documents. All should be written in English:
  • Personal statement: no more than 200 words for each response.
  • Academic referee: supply the email address of one academic referee.
  • Academic Transcript: latest official or unofficial transcripts including current GPA and modules (courses); unofficial transcripts must have clear evidence that they have been formally issued by your home institution, such as through a watermark or logo/crest.
  • PhD proposal outline (PhD applicants only): supply a short outline describing your current research project. This should be approximately one page in length.
  • Provide certification of competence in English before starting their studies.
  • Admission Requirements: In order to apply for study abroad at King’s, applicants must meet the entry criteria.
  • Language Requirement: International students whose first language is not English, must meet King’s English Language Requirements. All English Language test results must be sent via King’s Apply before the deadline.
