The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has decided to award the SA-CERN Programme Excellence MSc/PhD Bursary to international students conducting research in the same or related field as CERN. The bursary will be awarded for the academic year 2023-2024.

The excellence bursary is solely for students who are identified as South African citizens and are enrolled in an MSc or PhD degree programme in a South African University. The program covers research related to quantum-field theories, fundamental interactions, nuclear structure, and so much more. The bursary award is expected to cover the full cost of study, including sponsorship of research trips to CERN aligned with the projects of selected students.

This intergovernmental organization operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It is based in a northwestern suburb of Geneva, on France–Switzerland border.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) incorporates using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. With instruments that are purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors, CERN can perform world-class research in fundamental physics.  The organization works to help in uncovering what the universe is made of and how it works.

Eligibility Criteria

  • How to Apply:  Individuals who want to apply for this opportunity must submit the below-listed documents via mail   in due time to be considered. 
  • Supporting Documents:  The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • your up-to-date CV
  • copy of your full academic record
  • statement of purpose
  • proposed supervisor
  • copy of your ID document
  • Three letters of recommendation (should be sent separately by letter-writers);
  • Copies of any research publications/reports you have (co-)authored; and
  • copies of your dissertation from your previous level of study
  • Admission Requirements:  The candidates should have finished previous degree with an aggregate of ³ 65%. 
  • Language Requirement:  The students must meet the language required based on the medium of instruction for the delivery of their undertaken courses. 

Offered Benefits

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) will award the selected postgraduate candidates a bursary per annum as valued below: 

  • MSc level: ~R115 000 – 150 000 
  • PhD level: ~R102 000 – R177 000
