Department of History of Religion or Department of Universal History


The IEG awards research fellowships to junior scientists (doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers) from Germany and abroad in history, theology or any other historical discipline. Research projects addressing the historical foundations of Europe from early modern to contemporary history, particularly those focussing on the religious, political and social dimensions of these periods, are eligible for funding. Every year about 20 fellowships are assigned. The base amount is EUR 1,200 for doctoral candidates and EUR 1,800 for post-doctoral researchers in addition to a family allowance, if necessary.

Eligibility Criteria

Target Group Academics from Germany and abroad still working on or just having completed their thesis, are generally eligible for application. Applicants are required to have at least 1 qualified history or theology degree. For postdoctoral projects, the thesis has to be submitted by the end of the application period. Sponsorship of the final phase of the thesis followed by a postdoctoral phase is not possible!

Academic Requirements Doctoral candidates and postdocs

Application Requirements Doctoral candidates from Germany and abroad can apply (requirement: subject study is history, theology or another historically working science; degree at least: MA, State Examination, Diplom, Church Examination Applicants should have worked on their dissertation for a maximum of three years at the start of sponsorship. Postdoctorates may also apply. The PhD should not have been completed more than three years previously at the start of sponsorship (non-academic activities are not taken into account). At the end of the application period the final examination or the defence of the dissertation must have been successfully completed. Sponsorship of the final phase of the thesis followed by a postdoctoral phase is not possible.

Family allowance Foreign married scholarship holders who apply for a scholarship for at least 7 months, and spouses thereof present in the Federal Republic do not have personal income of more than € 400 can receive a family allowance, if they apply for it with the scholarship application and they will be granted accordingly.
Living and working in IEG For fellows and visiting scientists in the institute building are 21 rooms available, which are fully furnished as living and work spaces. Each room has hot and cold water, telephone and internet access. Bed linen and towels are provided. In the living area are bathrooms with showers, two fully equipped kitchens and washer and dryer are available. A club room, television and video equipment used for relaxation.
The rent for a living and study room in the Institute for monthly scholarship canditate of the IEG is 160 €. It includes all utilities such as heating, electricity, water, cleaning, linen and towels, and the phone fee.
